Christmas is coming

For those visiting the blog on blogspot and not on feed readers, you will see that I changed the design for winter and Christmas. Mostly winter. Because Europe has a snowy wintery weather already.

So here is a little snowball with a hat, for the Christmas tree, done in knitting. It's tiny, only 4 cm high.

----------------------------

Happy Thanksgiving and cupcake

Happy Thansgiving for those celebrating it (which isn't the case here in France, even if we have fun  seeing Obama setting those turkeys free), and happy Ste Catherine for us (for those who have no clue what it is, it's an old French tradition of celebrating spinsters over 25. We don't really do it anymore though).

Now, back to knitting. I made a coffee cupcake to go with the donut. It's weird to knit this flat and try to hide the seams afterwards.

Apparently, British magazines like to knit things flat, even gloves. I had to give it a go, fingerless gloves with mitten conversion, but I can't show the picture yet because I have to finish it. I have to say I really don't like to wear gloves with seams. That's why I'm lagging finishing it I guess. But I started another fingerless lacey gloves, blue this time....

---------------------------------

Brown fingerless gloves done !

First, I want to answer Jane's question : the knitted reindeer is coming from the special "Christmas gifts and decorations" from Knit Today issue 52.

Now, it's happy dance day, as I'm finished with the fingerless gloves from Simply Knitting October 2010. I have to say that the pattern is full of mistakes, I'm surprised of the magazine. But I managed in the end. And I made it a little longer because I wanted my fingers covered a little more.

Now, the picture.... DBF woke up from his Sunday nap a bit cold, so he tried the gloves. Only he put them the wrong way around, ribbed face up (hand on the poright), and it was surprising to see a more masculine version !

The hand on the left is mine, with the proper zig zag patern on to of the hand !

-------------------------------------------

Are you hungry?

People like my pink gloves, I'm very happy, because they were quite difficult and long to make. So after that, I made an easy knit : a donut for my donut loving DBF. Chocolate frosting with no sprinkles is common over here.

I'm in the middle of making brown fingerless gloves, with a lacey pattern. The left hand is done, and as usual, it's hard to concentrate on the right one. After all it took more than a day knitting non stop to have the left one. But I know I will advance faster during the weekend, when DBF is there, somehow I'm more concentrated then ;)

------------------------------------------------

Glomitts finished !

I had set a limit of Sunday to finish the glove-mittens, and I succeded !!

I managed to make them both the same size, that was my big fear as the instructions were in measurements and not in rounds.

And of course, now I wear them, and it's good timing with the cold weather arriving here.

And I will now try another model of fingerless gloves.

There's also a picture of a reindeer I knitted, it's a pair with the snowmen... I think it looks mostly silly, and the limbs are weird,, but it's the pattern like that.

-----------------------------------------------

Mittens or fingerless?

I think I lost people by posting very sporadically and by doing knitting instead of stitching. But hey, I love new stuff. I think that's what characterises me : instead of learning craft techniques and remaining in the comfort zone, I always want to try a new challenge.

This time, it's fingerless gloves with flap. See the pattern here. I already have some my dad gave me for Christmas a while ago, but I wanted to try and make them. Challenge.

First time with cable pattern. First time with fingers shaping. First time with a flap. And first time ripping and reknitting because of the size.

But the downside is... I have to make it twice. That's the principle of pairs. And it's hard for me, redoing the same...

Especially since I have a long wish list !!! But well, I will force me to finish it.

-------------------------------------------

A lot of text for a change...

It's really starting to feel like winter in here : it's only 5pm and it's getting dark and grey, with a bit of cold mist. Depressing. But soon, we will set up the Christmas decorations. I have to wait until DBF staches away his Halloween toys and brings up the tree. We still have time.

But I know Northern French and English people will agree it's a weather to stay inside with warm clothes and a cuppa. And knitting.

Isn't it odd that only a year or so ago, I wouldn't have been caught dead knitting? All but knitting ! You can check on earlier posts.... So what happened?

I think the trigger was when DBF's mother insisted that knitting wasn't about sweaters. If you look at French knitting magazines, you wouldn't guess. But it sounded like a challenge. A new craft to explore. And the web is full of critters, washcloths, socks, mittens, etc... free patterns. And explanations.

And I discovered English knitting magazines. They boomed after I left the country 2 years ago somehow. Same chatty atmosphere than stitching magazines, and original patterns. Tea cosies, snowmen, pouches, etc... I so love them ! Does that mean knitting is the craft of the day? I never see anybody knitting in public (or crafting for that matter).

So now I'm totally hooked. I don't want to do anything else but knitting. But those who follow me since a while know that it doesn't mean that I will not go back to do some other crafts: I have passion phases....

To finish, here is a little anecdote : DBF is a big fan of shooting video games, and he loves the fake guns that go with them. On Saturday he bought a sniper type gun for Wii, but there's a flaw in the design, and the B trigger didn't work because of a little gap in the gun. He exchanged it, it didn't change a thing. What to do? Double sided padded tape. And who thought of it? The crafty lady knitting next to the very depressed man. And he was so happy....

--------------------------------------------------

Knit knit knit !!!

This post will feel a bit more Christmas already.... But I'm mostly using my new knitting magazines, and so Christmas is the main theme !!!

First, here is a teddy, still from the "20 teddies to make" book. I started it during our stay in England, with the small 4mm needles offered in a magazine, and the snowflake yarn I bought in Hobbycraft. I abandonned it a little while to make the Halloween bear, but here it is !

Then here are candle holders, still in knitting. They are fast to make, and the light diffuse nicely through the patterns.

Finally, here are my 2 little snowmen... Not so small as they are about 12cm high, but I like them so much I want to make a whole family of them. Especially since I know some people will want some as well.... But before that, I will make the reinder that is also in that special "Christmas gifts and decorations" from Knit Today issue 52.
